Posted : 12 March 2024

In a stunning upset, world number one Novak Djokovic suffered a defeat in the third round at Indian Wells to 20-year-old Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi, ranked 123rd in the world. Nardi, who initially exited in the qualifiers, entered the main draw due to another player's withdrawal and secured a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Djokovic, yet to win a tournament this year, acknowledged the unusual situation, stating it's part of the sport, and expressed hope for a turnaround in his performance. Nardi, elated with the win, described it as a dream come true and will face Tommy Paul in the last 16.

The 20-year-old Italian reflected on the miraculous victory, confessing his disbelief at defeating Novak Djokovic and considering it a dream come true. Djokovic, who normally starts his season with a Grand Slam or Dubai win, expressed acceptance of the outcome and a desire to break the negative cycle in recent tournaments.

Despite hitting 17 winners, Djokovic made nine unforced errors in the match. Nardi, relishing the moment, expressed gratitude for the support and acknowledged the significance of beating the best player ever.

Looking ahead, Nardi is set to face Tommy Paul in the last 16, continuing his unexpected journey in the tournament. Meanwhile, other notable players like Daniil Medvedev, Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, and Taylor Fritz also progressed to the last 16 at Indian Wells.

The upset adds a surprising turn to Djokovic's season, leaving fans and tennis enthusiasts in awe of Nardi's remarkable achievement against the world number one.
