Novak Djokovic begins his quest for a record-setting 25th Grand Slam title at the French Open on Tuesday, taking on world No. 98 Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match. The 38-year-old Serb enters Roland Garros fresh from winning his 100th ATP title in Geneva, becoming only the third man in history to reach that milestone.
Djokovic emphasized the importance of gaining momentum on clay, stating that match experience is crucial for him ahead of major tournaments. He is placed on the same side of the draw as world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev.
Djokovic is seeded sixth and returns to Paris following a memorable Olympic gold medal win against Carlos Alcaraz last August. He expressed a renewed sense of confidence after his Geneva triumph, declaring he still harbors strong ambitions and remains focused on his goals. Zverev, meanwhile, is hoping to overcome past disappointments in Grand Slam finals.
However, his preparation has been far from smooth, having lost early in Hamburg due to illness and experiencing a frightening incident when his flight to Paris was struck by lightning, forcing an emergency landing.
On the women’s side, 2022 French Open finalist Coco Gauff begins her campaign against Australia’s Olivia Gadecki. Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, has not clinched a title since winning the WTA Finals last year, but recent strong showings in Madrid and Rome have boosted her confidence.
She has reached at least the quarterfinals in her last four appearances at Roland Garros and is aiming to build on that consistency as she eyes another deep run.
Another notable contender is Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, who is looking to capture her first Grand Slam after winning big titles in Dubai and Indian Wells. A semifinalist in Paris last year, Andreeva faces Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in the opening round and says she feels well-prepared and excited to compete.
Other matches include a return for Ons Jabeur, who meets Poland’s Magdalena French, and a compelling showdown between mothers Victoria Azarenka and Yanina Wickmayer, the latter set to retire after Wimbledon.
