Novak Djokovic showed signs of fatigue on Thursday but managed to defeat Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-3, 7-5 to reach the Shanghai Masters semifinal, where he will face tournament sensation Valentin Vacherot.
The 38-year-old Serbian, the highest-ranked player remaining in the draw, continues his pursuit of a fifth Shanghai title despite struggling with physical exhaustion and lingering fitness concerns throughout the week.
Djokovic admitted he was “a little too passive at times” but praised Bergs as a talented opponent. He broke in the sixth game of the first set and, despite looking overheated and needing a brief inhaler break, claimed the opening set.
The second set featured dramatic rallies, a crowd roaring for Djokovic, and a final break that sealed his victory despite Bergs saving two match points.
On the other side of the draw, Valentin Vacherot, a qualifier ranked 204th in the world, stunned Holger Rune 2-6, 7-6(7/4), 6-4 to reach the semifinals. After dropping the first set, Vacherot showed remarkable resilience, using his fitness and composure to outlast the world number 11.
Rune struggled to maintain control, committing errors and ultimately succumbing to Vacherot’s persistence, leaving the young Monégasque player celebrating in disbelief.
Vacherot described his upcoming clash with Djokovic as “unreal” and highlighted the physical challenge posed by facing such a seasoned champion. His unlikely run to the semifinals underscores the unpredictable nature of tennis, proving that determination and stamina can overcome rankings and expectations.
