Linda Noskova produced a stunning performance to defeat Jessica Pegula and lift the Berlin Open trophy on Sunday, strengthening her credentials ahead of Wimbledon.
The Czech star, currently ranked world No. 13, overcame the American fourth seed 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a hard-fought final that was significantly delayed by severe weather conditions in the German capital. Heavy storms forced tournament organisers to evacuate the venue for several hours, with the championship match eventually beginning nearly six hours behind schedule.
Noskova, 21, made a strong start by taking the opening set and remained composed throughout the contest despite Pegula's fightback in the second. She regained momentum in the deciding set, securing an early break before closing out the victory to capture her second career singles title and first at WTA 500 level.
The triumph is expected to propel Noskova into the WTA top 10 for the first time when the updated rankings are released next week, marking another significant milestone in her rapidly developing career.
Speaking after the match, Noskova described the achievement as a memorable moment.
She said the title was "incredible and unforgettable," adding that while players never forget their first trophy, a second career title is equally special.
For Pegula, the defeat represented a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive week. The 32-year-old had reached the final after eliminating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals and was hoping to claim the Berlin title for the first time.
Noskova entered the final in excellent form after a dominant semi-final victory over Filipino qualifier Alexandra Eala. She carried that momentum into the championship match, breaking Pegula twice to secure the first set.
Although Pegula responded by taking the second set and handing Noskova her first set loss of the tournament, the Czech quickly regained control in the decider. An early break of serve proved decisive as she sealed one of the biggest titles of her career.
Following her Berlin success, Noskova will remain in Germany to compete at the Bad Homburg Open, another key grass-court event, as she continues preparations for Wimbledon.
