Nishesh Basavareddy Eyes Djokovic Clash After Reaching First ATP Semifinal

Posted : 09 January 2025

Nishesh Basavareddy, a 19-year-old American teenager, made waves by reaching his first ATP semifinal at the Auckland Classic on Thursday, a remarkable achievement that followed his victory over Alex Michelsen. Following his win, Basavareddy expressed admiration for Novak Djokovic, calling the Serbian legend his favorite player and revealing that he had modeled his game after the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

This admiration will be put to the test as Basavareddy is scheduled to face Djokovic in the first round of the Australian Open after the draw for the Melbourne major was made. Despite being a newcomer on the ATP scene, Basavareddy's strong performance at the Auckland Classic, where he overcame Michelsen 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, has showcased his growing confidence and skills, particularly in his return game—a quality that has drawn comparisons to Djokovic.

The American player has already built a solid reputation on the ATP Challenger Tour, where he won two titles and reached four additional finals last season. This success led him to turn professional in December, and his recent tour-level achievement—the youngest American to reach a hardcourt semifinal since Reilly Opelka in 2016—has been an unexpected yet exciting milestone. Basavareddy, currently ranked 133rd in the world, expressed his confidence, saying that making a deep run in his first tour events gives him the motivation to continue improving.

Looking ahead, Basavareddy’s immediate focus is on a rematch with veteran Gael Monfils, who defeated him in the opening round at Brisbane the previous week. Embracing his underdog status, Basavareddy is playing with freedom and has the added benefit of low expectations, which has helped him perform well. His recent success has drawn attention from family and friends, marking a significant moment in his young career.
