Nigeria’s top junior player Seun Ogunsakin has officially been listed for the qualifying rounds of the 2026 Roland Garros Junior Championships. The event is scheduled to take place at the prestigious Porte d'Auteuil in Paris from May 31 to June 6. Ogunsakin secured his spot following a consistent run of form on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit; he currently holds a world junior ranking of 67.
The 17-year-old Ekiti-born player is one of only 24 players selected for the qualifying draw. These athletes will battle for a limited number of spots in the main draw alongside 46 automatic qualifiers. His entry into the French Open junior qualifiers marks a significant milestone for Nigerian tennis; he is the first player from the country in several decades to reach this level of a junior Grand Slam.
Ogunsakin’s rise this season has been fueled by his success in the ITF Grand Slam Player Development Programme. His most notable achievement came in March when he clinched the ITF J200 Africa Regional Championship title in Cairo, Egypt. During that tournament; he displayed immense grit by defeating Botswana’s Ntugamili Raguin in a thrilling three-set final.
The young Nigerian has proven to be particularly effective on clay surfaces; which will be the primary battleground in Paris. Statistics show that he has maintained a 69 percent win rate on clay this year; recording 11 victories and only 5 losses in competitive matches. His tactical maturity and baseline consistency have made him a formidable opponent for the world's best emerging talents.
Coach reactions from the Nigerian tennis federation have been overwhelmingly positive regarding his development. Technical experts believe that his training at the ITF High Performance Centre in Tunisia has sharpened his technical skills for high-pressure environments. Ogunsakin will now look to emulate past junior champions as he seeks to make his mark on the global stage.
The draw for the qualifying rounds is expected to be released in the coming days. Nigerian fans are hopeful that his current momentum will carry him through to the main tournament. A successful run in Paris would further cement his status as the brightest prospect in African junior tennis.
