Nigerian girls sweep finals spots at NASCO/ITF J30 Championship

Posted : 13 June 2026

Nigerian junior tennis players continued their impressive run at the 2026 NASCO/ITF J30 World Tennis Tour Junior Championship, dominating the girls’ events and reinforcing the country's growing reputation in youth tennis.

The host nation secured all available spots in the girls’ singles final, with Khadijat Mohammed and Success Ogunjobi advancing to set up an all-Nigerian title clash at the Tennis Complex of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Mohammed stormed into the final with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory over fellow Nigerian Emmanuel Kwange in the semifinals, while Ogunjobi overcame Gloria Samuel 6-2, 6-2 to book her place in the championship match.

Nigeria’s dominance also extended to the girls’ doubles event, where Emmanuel Kwange and Success Ogunjobi captured the title after a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win against Khadijat Mohammed and Sri Lanka’s V.D. Rashmi Omaye Wijewardana in the final.

Earlier, Mohammed and Wijewardana had battled past the pair of Toluwalashe Agunbiade and Lithuania’s Roneta Kacinskaite 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 in a closely contested semifinal encounter.

Kwange and Ogunjobi reached the doubles final after defeating another Nigerian pairing, Daisy Okechukwu and Gloria Samuel, 6-3, 6-4.

In the boys’ singles category, Nigeria’s Gbolahan Olawale produced a spirited comeback to defeat compatriot Seyi Ogunsakin 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 and secure a place in the final.

Olawale will now face China’s Hengzhi Cui, who advanced after defeating compatriot Jinxuan Cheng 6-4, 6-1 in the second semifinal.

Despite his singles success, Olawale fell short in the boys’ doubles final, where he and partner Ishaku Kwange lost 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 to the Chinese duo of Jinxuan Cheng and Hengzhi Cui.

The championship, which features participants from 14 countries, will conclude this weekend with the singles finals as Nigeria eyes more titles on home soil.

The exceptional performances by these young athletes highlight the bright future of Nigerian tennis on the international stage. With guaranteed silverware in the girls' categories and a highly anticipated international showdown in the boys' final, the host nation has fully capitalized on its home-court advantage. Tennis enthusiasts can look forward to a thrilling conclusion to the tournament as these rising stars battle for ultimate glory in Abuja.
