Nigeria booked a place in the next stage of the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III Qualifier after defeating previously unbeaten Madagascar 3-0 in their final Group C round-robin match in Gaborone, Botswana.
The convincing victory secured Nigeria's place at the top of Group C with an unbeaten record. It also brought Madagascar's impressive run in the competition to an end.
Nigeria made a strong start through Success Ogunjobi in the opening singles match. Ogunjobi recovered from losing the first set 3-6 to produce an outstanding comeback, winning the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3 to claim a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The win handed Nigeria a valuable 1-0 lead and shifted the momentum firmly in their favour ahead of the second singles contest.
Oyinlomo Quadre then delivered another composed performance to secure qualification for Nigeria. She defeated Iariniaina Tsantaniony in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-3 to extend the lead to 2-0 and guarantee the tie.
With first place in Group C already within reach, Nigeria completed the clean sweep in the doubles match. Quadre teamed up with Khadijat to dominate their Madagascan opponents, producing an emphatic 6-2, 6-0 victory.
The commanding doubles display highlighted Nigeria's strength across all three rubbers and underlined the team's consistency throughout the group stage.
Nigeria's unbeaten campaign has been built on disciplined performances in both singles and doubles. The team's ability to recover from difficult moments, as demonstrated by Ogunjobi's comeback, has been one of the key factors behind its successful run in Botswana.
Finishing top of Group C gives Nigeria valuable momentum heading into the knockout phase of the competition, where stronger opposition is expected. The performances of Ogunjobi, Quadre, and Khadijat will also boost confidence as the team continues its pursuit of promotion from Africa Group III.
With the group stage now complete, Team Nigeria will shift its attention to the next round, aiming to maintain its unbeaten record and move one step closer to achieving its objective in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III Qualifier.
