Nigeria Drawn Away to El Salvador in Davis Cup World Group II Play-Offs

Nigeria face an away test against El Salvador in the 2027 Davis Cup by Generali World Group II Play-Offs following Monday’s draw in London.

The draw, conducted on Sept. 28 at the World Tennis offices, produced 26 home-and-away ties involving 52 nations, with the matches scheduled for Feb. 5-7, 2027.

Nigeria, who were unseeded, were paired with fifth seeds El Salvador, who will have the right to choose the venue after the ground selection is decided by lot.

The tie presents Nigeria with an opportunity to recover from their 4-0 defeat by Morocco in Rabat in the World Group II tie played on Sept. 19-20.

The loss ended Nigeria’s immediate hopes of progressing to the 2027 World Group I Play-Offs and sent Captain Benson Ishicheli’s team into the relegation play-offs.

Nigeria must now secure victory in El Salvador to preserve their World Group II status. The 13 winning nations from the 26 play-offs will remain in World Group II for September 2027, while the losing teams will drop into Regional Group III events.

Nigeria earned promotion to World Group II earlier this year after ending a 30-year wait with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in Lagos in February.

Daniel Adeleye produced two singles victories in that tie, while Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel combined to claim the decisive doubles rubber.

The forthcoming encounter, however, presents a different challenge, with Nigeria required to negotiate an away tie in Central America against an El Salvador side ranked inside the world’s top 60.

El Salvador will also be seeking a response after losing their most recent World Group II tie, while Nigeria will have the intervening months to strengthen their singles options and further develop their doubles combination.

With the tie carrying World Group II survival implications, preparations by the Nigeria Tennis Federation and the eventual selection of the squad will be closely watched ahead of the February contest.
