Nick Kyrgios’ much-anticipated return to the French Open has been derailed by a new knee injury, ending his plans to play doubles with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson. The 30-year-old had not competed at Roland Garros since 2017 and was set to fill in for Max Purcell, Thompson’s usual partner, who is currently serving a doping suspension.
Kyrgios has battled a series of injuries—including to his foot, wrist, and knee—since reaching the 2022 Wimbledon final, limiting him to just four singles matches this year.
Thompson shared that Kyrgios had been eager about the opportunity, frequently checking in about their plans for the doubles tournament.
The Canberra native had even resumed clay training in Australia in preparation. However, only days before the tournament, he informed Thompson that he had injured his knee again, making participation impossible.
According to Thompson, Kyrgios was deeply disappointed and voiced concerns about how many more physical setbacks he could endure.
With Kyrgios sidelined, Thompson has now partnered with compatriot Jason Kubler for the doubles draw. The pair are scheduled to face Frenchmen Quentin Halys and Albano Olivetti in the opening round on Tuesday.
