Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has confirmed his plans to return to competitive tennis by signing up for the 2026 Kooyong Classic, the traditional warm-up event ahead of the Australian Open. The 30-year-old Australian has struggled with career-threatening injuries over the past two years and played only five singles matches in the 2025 season, his most recent appearance coming at the Miami Open in March.
Currently ranked 666th in the world without a protected ranking, Kyrgios will require wildcards to enter any ATP warm-up tournaments as well as the Australian Open itself. Given his status as a former Brisbane International champion and a perennial crowd favourite at Melbourne Park, those wildcards are expected to be granted should he request them.
Kyrgios is also scheduled to take part in other exhibition matches before the end of the year, including a highly anticipated "battle of the sexes" clash against Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on 28 December. The Kooyong Classic, returning after a one-year hiatus due to operational issues, will run from 13 to 15 January and will feature a strong Italian presence with Davis Cup stars Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, and world No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti all confirmed in the men’s draw. The event offers players a final tune-up before the Grand Slam season kicks off just a few kilometres away at Melbourne Park.
