Nick Kyrgios Pulls Out of Exhibition Match with Abdominal Strain

Posted : 08 January 2025

Nick Kyrgios withdrew from an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic on Wednesday, citing an abdominal strain, which raises concerns about his fitness for the upcoming Australian Open. The Australian, who had been making his comeback to tennis after 18 months following knee surgery and wrist reconstruction, faced difficulties in his first-round loss in Brisbane. Despite playing two doubles matches with Djokovic, Kyrgios struggled in his singles match against French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, admitting that he was in pain after the encounter.

The exhibition match between Kyrgios and Djokovic was scheduled for Thursday at Melbourne Park's Rod Laver Arena, just days before the start of the Australian Open on Sunday. Kyrgios shared his disappointment on Instagram, revealing that an ultrasound showed a grade 1 abdominal strain and that he would need to rest and focus on recovery in hopes of being ready for the Open.

The 29-year-old has been a crowd favorite at the Australian Open, where he reached his first major singles final in 2022, ultimately losing to Djokovic in four sets at Wimbledon. Kyrgios has had a tumultuous career, often facing challenges with his temperament, and has yet to break through in an era dominated by the likes of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

Despite these setbacks, Kyrgios remains a popular figure in the tennis world and continues to capture the attention of fans with his electrifying play and unpredictable nature. The Australian Open will mark a significant moment for him, as he looks to overcome his physical struggles and make a strong run at the tournament.
