Joao Fonseca made history as the second-youngest player to claim the Next Gen ATP Finals title, defeating Learner Tien in the final on Sunday. The Brazilian teenager joins the ranks of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the only 18-year-olds to win the prestigious tournament. Fonseca’s victory capped off a remarkable year in which he secured his first Challenger title and achieved 12 Tour-level wins, including a flawless run at the Next Gen Finals.
Reflecting on his success, Fonseca expressed pride in his accomplishments while setting his sights on even greater achievements. "If you told me at the start of the year that I would accomplish all this, I wouldn’t believe it," he said. "I’ve grown so much mentally and physically, winning against top-ranked players. My dream is to become world No. 1, but for now, I’ll enjoy this victory with my family."
The tournament, held in Jeddah, features the top eight players aged 20 or under in a unique format designed for fast-paced matches. Sets are played to four games with a tiebreak at 3-3, and matches are best-of-five sets with no-ad scoring. Fonseca maintained an unbeaten record throughout the competition, defeating Tien 2-4, 4-3(8), 4-0, 4-2 in the final.
Starting the year outside the top 200, Fonseca now ranks as world No. 145. His performance in Jeddah included impressive wins over higher-seeded players like Arthur Fils, the world No. 20 and tournament favorite, and Jakub Mensik. Fonseca’s triumphs against these rising stars highlight his readiness to compete at the highest levels.
Earlier in the year, Fonseca made headlines by reaching the quarter-finals at the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro, where he secured his first Tour-level win against Fils. He also clinched his first ATP Challenger Tour title in Lexington, demonstrating his potential as one of tennis’s brightest young talents.
Fonseca relishes the pressure of competing on the big stage, describing how he thrives in high-stakes matches. "I enjoy playing against the best players in big arenas. I feel like I belong in these moments where you need to be brave and go for your shots. This year, I’ve learned a lot, and it’s only the beginning."
Looking ahead, Fonseca is eager to measure himself against Alcaraz and Sinner, past champions who have dominated men’s tennis. "Winning Next Gen shows I’m on the right path. I hope to match or even surpass what they’ve achieved," he said. "Grand Slam stages are where I aim to be, and I’ll continue working to make that dream a reality."
