Brazilian wild card Nauhany Vitoria Leme Da Silva made history on Day 1 of the 2025 Sao Paulo Open, becoming the first player born in 2010 to win a WTA main-draw match. The 15-year-old defeated fellow Brazilian Carolina Alves 6-7(0), 6-2, 6-0 in a match lasting 1 hour and 49 minutes, captivating the home crowd.
The tournament, held at Villa-Lobos State Park in the Alto de Pinheiros district, marked the first Hologic WTA Tour event in Sao Paulo since 2000. Leme Da Silva told the on-court interviewer that she grew up playing on these same courts, making the victory especially meaningful.
Ranked No. 1,206, Leme Da Silva is participating in just her seventh professional event. She earned her WTA ranking in September 2024 and is set to break into the Top 1,000 next week. Nicknamed Nana, she is also ranked No. 37 in juniors and reached the third round of Wimbledon girls’ singles this year.
The match against No. 237 Alves marked the first all-Brazilian clash at WTA Tour level since Teliana Pereira defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia in Miami 2016. Despite losing the first set in a tiebreak after saving two set points, Leme Da Silva dominated the remainder of the match, winning 11 straight games from 2-1 down in the second set. This victory also marked her first win over a Top 300 player. She will face Argentinian second seed Solana Sierra, a Top 100 player, in the second round.
Another Brazilian teen, Victoria Luiza Barros, 15, also impressed on her WTA debut. She challenged No. 136 Whitney Osuigwe, leading 4-1 in the second set before falling 6-3, 6-4. Ranked No. 19 in juniors, Barros is playing in her fifth professional tournament. Leme Da Silva and Barros will team up in the doubles event, facing Anna Rogers and Janice Tjen in the opening round.
Elsewhere, French player Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah, 19, staged one of the year’s most remarkable comebacks, overturning a 5-0 third-set deficit to beat Ana Sofia Sánchez 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7) in 2 hours and 54 minutes. Rajaonah saved three match points, including one down 5-1 and two more at 5-4, rallying with a series of spectacular forehand winners.
The Sao Paulo Open opened with a series of thrilling performances, signaling a promising future for several young talents on the WTA Tour.
