National Table Tennis Championship In Osun: Kogi-born Marvelous/Victor claim titles

Posted : 05 May 2025

The Kogi State Table Tennis contingent to the recently concluded Michael and Felicia Alabi National Table Tennis Championship in Otan Ayegbaju, Osun State, has returned with two medals: one gold and one bronze.

Joseph Marvelous won the gold medal, while Joseph Victor claimed the bronze. Both medals came from the U-15 Cadet Boys’ Singles category.

The championship, which took place from April 27 to Saturday, May 3, in the South-Western state of Osun, also featured participants from other states.

Head Coach of the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, Coach Friday Abah, described the result as a positive reflection of his consistent efforts to give these young talents a purposeful direction in table tennis. He noted that the performance and medals won are clear evidence of the unquantifiable benefits being reaped by the state.

"These youngsters have proven that with hard work, determination, courage, doggedness, and resilience, they can become international champions. We have consistently trained them and participated in various championships, where we have performed creditably," he said.

"One of the major challenges we continually face is the lack of sponsorship and support. A significant number of the championships we’ve attended in the past, including this one, were self-funded with the help of a few passionate table tennis enthusiasts."

Coach Abah called on the government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to support young, energetic, and athletic Kogi indigenes who are passionate about sports and have the potential to elevate their God-given talents. He emphasized that sports can be a powerful tool for reducing unemployment and curbing youth restiveness if given proper attention and priority.

It will be recalled that last month, another promising Kogi-born table tennis talent, Joshua Samson, qualified to represent Nigeria at the upcoming 2025 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Hope Week Challenge, scheduled for July in Lagos.
