Naomi Osaka Withdraws from Japan Open Due to Leg Injury

Posted : 17 October 2025

Naomi Osaka has pulled out of the Japan Open ahead of her quarterfinal match after failing to recover from a leg injury.

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the Japan Open ahead of her scheduled quarterfinal match on Friday after failing to recover from a left leg injury. The four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 sustained the injury during her hard-fought round of 16 victory over defending champion Suzan Lamens on Wednesday in Osaka.

The 28-year-old top seed was visibly emotional during that match, struggling to move freely and relying on painkillers to finish the contest. She eventually sealed the win in three sets but ended the encounter with her left thigh heavily strapped, sparking concerns about her fitness.

Tournament organizers confirmed her withdrawal in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “We regret to announce that Naomi Osaka has not recovered from a left leg injury sustained during the second round of this tournament and has withdrawn from the quarterfinals scheduled for today.”

Osaka had been set to face Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian in the last eight. Her withdrawal now leaves fourth seed Leylah Fernandez as the highest-ranked player remaining in the draw.

Currently ranked world No. 16, Osaka is expected to feature at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week, though her participation will depend on her recovery progress. The injury setback is a disappointment for the Japanese star, who was hoping to continue her strong comeback season on home soil.
