Naomi Osaka Overcomes Set Down to Reach Australian Open Third Round

Posted : 16 January 2025

Naomi Osaka fought back from a set down to reach the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, marking her first Grand Slam appearance at this stage since giving birth to her daughter in 2023.

The two-time Melbourne champion, who claimed titles in 2019 and 2021, dropped the first set to Karolina Muchova, but responded with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win. This victory came after Osaka’s demanding first-round encounter against Caroline Garcia, where she was also pushed to three sets.

Muchova, who had beaten Osaka in their most recent meeting at the 2024 US Open, dominated the opening set in just 32 minutes. However, Osaka regrouped and improved her play, securing a double-break in the second set before closing it out with a quick service game.

The momentum shifted in the decider, with Osaka’s powerful groundstrokes helping her secure a break for a 3-2 lead. She saved a break point with a stunning backhand winner, consolidating her lead to 4-2, and another break sealed the win in 1 hour and 57 minutes.

Osaka’s victory sets up a third-round clash with Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, as the former world No. 1 aims to reach the last 16. Reflecting on her win, Osaka admitted the match was emotionally draining but also a significant personal achievement, noting the “little revenge” for her US Open loss to Muchova. She expressed her joy at returning to the Australian Open courts, saying it had been a fulfilling experience.
