Naomi Osaka Falls to Peyton Stearns in Italian Open

Naomi Osaka's struggles with form continued at the Italian Open on Monday as she was eliminated by Peyton Stearns in a three-set match, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4). This defeat marks another setback for Osaka, who has yet to regain her best level since returning to the WTA tour after a 15-month hiatus for the birth of her daughter.

 

 Despite a promising return with a minor title in Saint Malo earlier this month, Osaka has struggled to progress beyond the Round of 16 at tournaments higher than the WTA 125 series since January. Her performance in Rome followed early exits at Indian Wells and Madrid, compounded by an abdominal injury that forced her out of the Australian Open.

 

Stearns, who also knocked out fifth seed Madison Keys in the previous round, will next face either Danielle Collins, who defeated reigning champion Iga Swiatek, or Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals. Stearns' victory over Osaka is part of a standout run at the Italian Open, as she continues to make a name for herself in top-tier tennis.

 

The match lasted two hours and 43 minutes in scorching conditions on centre court, a testament to the physicality and intensity of the contest.

 

In other news, Jannik Sinner is looking to claim his first title in Rome as he faces Jesper de Jong, a lucky loser from the qualifiers, in a match that will not only challenge Sinner against the world number one but also against a passionate home crowd.

 

 As the tournament progresses, Italian players Matteo Berrettini and Jasmine Paolini are also set to compete, while top seed Aryna Sabalenka faces Marta Kostyuk in a women's match on centre court. Sinner’s pursuit of a title in his home country is seen as an important step ahead of the upcoming French Open.
