Naomi Osaka Falls to Pavlyuchenkova, Misses Wimbledon Last 16 Again

Posted : 04 July 2025

Naomi Osaka’s hopes of reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time were dashed on Friday after a dramatic three-set loss to Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Despite a strong start that saw her claim the first set 6-3 on Court Two, Osaka couldn't maintain her momentum. Pavlyuchenkova mounted a determined comeback to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory and book her place in the last 16.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, has not lifted a major title since the 2021 Australian Open. Her performances at Wimbledon have consistently fallen short, with this year marking her fifth appearance at the All England Club—none of which have seen her advance past the third round. This latest defeat extends her streak to 12 consecutive Grand Slam appearances without reaching the fourth round.

Having returned to the tour in early 2024 after a 15-month maternity break, Osaka continues to search for rhythm on grass, a surface she has openly admitted to struggling with. Earlier in the week, the former world number one revealed she had developed a fear of grass over the years, which had affected her mindset and confidence. Despite efforts to overcome those mental hurdles, the challenge once again proved too great.

In a tightly contested match, Osaka came out strong, building a 4-1 lead and serving out the first set with an ace. However, Pavlyuchenkova responded with power, taking the second set with a sharp forehand winner. Osaka left the court to regroup ahead of the deciding set but was immediately broken and trailed 3-0. She fought back to level at 3-3, only to falter again as the Russian seized control in the final moments.

Reflecting on her win, Pavlyuchenkova said, “I felt like I was behind for most of the match, so I focused on playing point by point. I'm proud of my mental toughness in this tournament.” She acknowledged the crowd's support for Osaka but expressed satisfaction with her resilience, especially on a surface she admits isn’t her strongest.
