Naomi Osaka continued her impressive run at the Bad Homburg Open on Tuesday, overcoming Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-3 to secure a place in the quarterfinals. The victory marks the Japanese star’s first quarterfinal appearance of the 2026 season as she builds momentum ahead of Wimbledon.
For the second consecutive match, Osaka made a flying start, storming to a 5-0 advantage in the opening set. However, Mertens responded with a brief comeback, narrowing the deficit to 5-3 before Osaka closed out the set. The fifth seed then maintained control in the second set, comfortably sealing the win in straight sets.
After the match, Osaka reflected on her performance and her efforts to maintain consistency throughout the contest. She noted that she had experienced a significant drop in level during her opening-round match and was pleased with her ability to remain steadier against Mertens.
The former world No. 1 also revealed that the hot conditions did not affect her game. With temperatures reaching the mid-30s Celsius, Osaka said she enjoys playing in warm weather and felt comfortable competing in the heat.
Osaka will now await the winner of the second-round clash between Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva and Ekaterina Alexandrova, who are scheduled to meet on Wednesday.
Elsewhere in the tournament, recent Berlin Open champion Linda Noskova suffered an early exit. The Czech player, who climbed into the world's top 10 after claiming the Berlin title, was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Ruse will next face Anna Kalinskaya in the second round.
Meanwhile, Elina Svitolina produced a strong comeback to beat Liudmila Samsonova 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 after more than two hours on court. The Ukrainian will now take on China’s Wang Xinyu for a place in the semifinals.
