Naomi Osaka Admits Motherhood Dilemma Following Early Exit at Miami Open

Posted : 22 March 2026

Former world number one Naomi Osaka has opened up about the emotional challenges of balancing a high-level tennis career with her role as a mother. The discussion followed her straight-sets defeat to Australian qualifier Talia Gibson at the Miami Open on Saturday. Osaka lost the encounter 7-5, 6-4, marking her second consecutive early tournament exit during the American hardcourt swing.

The 28-year-old Japanese star returned to professional competition in 2024 following a 15-month maternity break. While she reached the US Open semifinals last year, her 2026 campaign has been hampered by a recent abdominal injury and inconsistent form. Osaka told reporters that she feels a constant internal conflict between the time required to be a top player and the time she wants to spend with her daughter.

In the match against Gibson, Osaka struggled to capitalize on her opportunities despite serving seven aces in the opening set. The 21-year-old Australian displayed remarkable composure, breaking Osaka’s serve at crucial moments to secure the biggest win of her career. Gibson has now defeated four top-20 opponents in the last three weeks, continuing a breakthrough run that began at Indian Wells.

Following the loss, Osaka confirmed significant changes to her upcoming schedule on the clay-court circuit. She has decided to withdraw from the Charleston Open to prioritize time at home with her young family. However, she still hopes to compete in major European tournaments including Madrid and Rome. Her primary goal for the spring remains the French Open at Roland Garros in late May.

Osaka emphasized that she is no longer willing to sacrifice her relationship with her daughter for the sake of additional tournament appearances. She acknowledged that while she still possesses the drive to win titles, her perspective on success has shifted since becoming a parent. The four-time major winner remains ranked 15th in the world but faces a drop in the standings following this early exit.

Talia Gibson will now move on to face American teenage sensation Iva Jovic in the third round on Sunday. For Osaka, the focus shifts to recovery and finding a sustainable rhythm that allows her to remain competitive without missing key milestones at home. Fans and analysts will watch closely to see if this adjusted schedule helps her regain the form that once made her the dominant force in women's tennis.
