Naidoo Makes History as First Player of Color to Win SA Open, While Maas Faces Disappointment

Posted : 03 March 2025

Dylan Naidoo etched his name into the history books by becoming the first player of color to win the Investec South African Open, claiming victory in a dramatic playoff against England’s Laurie Canter at Durban Country Club. Heavy rain had forced the cancellation of the final round, leaving Naidoo and Canter tied at 14-under-par.

With the championship to be decided in a sudden-death playoff, Naidoo produced a brilliant chip shot to secure a birdie on the first extra hole, while Canter missed his 15-foot putt, sealing the biggest win of Naidoo’s career.

Naidoo’s triumph held deep significance, particularly given that it occurred at the same venue where Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum made history in 1963 as the first player of color to win a professional event in South Africa.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Naidoo reflected on the struggles and sacrifices that led him to this moment, calling it a special victory for himself and the people of Durban. The enthusiastic crowd that braved the rain to support him only added to the occasion, with Naidoo comparing the experience to playing in front of Tiger Woods’ legendary galleries.

In addition to his historic win, Naidoo secured a DP World Tour card and qualified for The Open Championship at Royal Portrush, joining fellow qualifiers Marco Penge and Darren Fichardt.

Meanwhile, Christiaan Maas, the leading amateur and two-time Freddie Tait Cup winner, expressed disappointment at the tournament’s reduced format, believing he had a genuine shot at the title had the final round taken place.

Despite his achievement, Maas lamented the missed opportunity, knowing he had been within reach of making history as the first amateur winner of the event since 1959.

For Naidoo, however, the future is filled with possibilities. His victory propelled him to the top of the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, with just a few events remaining in the season. Should he maintain his standing, greater opportunities await on the global stage. From navigating difficult moments in his career to lifting one of golf’s most prestigious national trophies, Naidoo’s journey is a testament to perseverance and the pursuit of dreams.
