Musetti Ends Four-Year Title Drought with Lyon Triumph Over Fritz

Posted : 25 October 2026

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti claimed his first ATP Tour title since 2022 after defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon on Sunday.

The 24-year-old produced a composed performance to overcome the second-seeded Fritz in 81 minutes, securing the third tour-level title of his career. His previous trophies came in Hamburg and Naples in 2022.

The victory also ended a difficult run of seven consecutive defeats in tournament finals, making the Lyon triumph a significant milestone in Musetti’s career.

Musetti’s victory followed a demanding journey to the final. He battled past France’s Luca Van Assche in a marathon quarter-final lasting more than three hours before overcoming fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli in the semi-finals, saving four match points along the way.

Against Fritz, the sixth seed made an immediate impact by breaking serve early in the opening set and establishing a commanding lead. He maintained his aggressive approach in the second set, exploiting his opponent’s mistakes and preventing the American from building any sustained momentum.

Musetti said his fighting spirit and positive attitude had been central to his success throughout the tournament. He also thanked his team for helping him through a physically challenging week, adding that he felt more relaxed during the final and was able to play with greater fluidity.

The Italian’s triumph provides a major boost after a difficult season and ends his long wait for another ATP title. For Fritz, the defeat prolongs his search for a 12th career title after an otherwise impressive run to the final.
