Mogaji triumphs over Ayenugba to win Amazons Tennis Tournament 2.0

Posted : 29 March 2026

Frances Mogaji delivered an impressive performance on Saturday to claim the Amazons Tennis Tournament 2.0 title, overcoming Funke Ayenugba in a thrilling final at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Rather than just a contest for silverware, the tournament served as a vibrant celebration of women in sports, held in commemoration of International Women’s Month. Organized under the theme “GIVE TO GAIN,” the event brought together over 120 players from more than 25 recreational tennis clubs across Lagos, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for women’s tennis.

Mogaji’s 4-1, 4-3(3) victory over Ayenugba reflected not only her resilience but also the high level of competition that defined the tournament. Initially approaching the event as a recreational outing, Mogaji admitted that the intensity of the matches quickly sharpened her focus.

Her opponent, Ayenugba, a Police Inspector, put up a strong fight despite battling fatigue from earlier demanding matches in the day. She acknowledged Mogaji’s quality, noting that the final lived up to expectations.

Convener of the tournament, Obayemi Joy, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond competition, aiming to encourage women’s participation in sports while promoting unity, passion, and empowerment.

At the close of the event, Mogaji was rewarded with a N300,000 cash prize and a trophy, while Ayenugba earned N200,000 as runner-up. The third-place finisher received N100,000.

In the junior category, Olayinka Ayinla emerged as the winner, taking home a N100,000 scholarship award—further underlining the tournament’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of female tennis players.

The Amazons Tennis Tournament 2.0 successfully combined elite recreational competition with a broader mission of female empowerment and youth development. By rewarding both veteran competitors and junior players, the event solidified its role as a premier platform for women's sports in Lagos. The "GIVE TO GAIN" initiative continues to foster a supportive community for female athletes across various skill levels.
