Mofifunoluwa Atilola Reaches African Junior Championship Semifinals

Posted : 10 September 2026

Nigerian junior tennis star Mofifunoluwa Atilola has reached the semifinals of the African Junior Championship for players aged 14 and under in Morocco.

The 12-year-old is the only Nigerian competing at the continental championship. She has continued to produce impressive results against some of Africa's leading young players.

Atilola's semifinal appearance adds another major achievement to an already impressive 2026 season. The youngster has established herself as one of Nigeria's leading prospects in junior tennis despite competing against players older than her.

She has also become the only player from West Africa to reach the last four of the competition in Morocco. Her run has therefore provided another major boost for Nigerian tennis at the continental level.

Atilola's progress comes after a strong series of performances on the African junior circuit. Earlier this year, she won an ITF/CAT Under-14 event in Algeria and later reached the semifinals of another tournament during the same campaign.

Her results in Algeria helped lift her to sixth in the African Under-14 rankings. She collected three trophies during the two-week circuit and defeated several highly rated opponents on her way to the finals.

The Nigerian youngster has also enjoyed success at home. In September, she successfully defended her Under-16 title at the Adewale Isa Foundation National Junior Tennis Championship despite being younger than most of her opponents. She defeated Salvation Alex 6-4, 6-0 in the final without dropping a set throughout the tournament.

That achievement followed her victory at the inaugural Bella Disu Open Under-14 tournament in Lagos earlier this year. Atilola defeated her rivals to claim the girls' title and earned a scholarship designed to support her continued development.

Her latest continental run further underlines her growing reputation. She has already represented Nigeria at several ITF/CAT events and has consistently competed successfully against older players.

Atilola will now turn her attention to the semifinal as she bids to reach the championship match in Morocco. A place in the final would mark another significant step in the rapid development of one of Nigeria's brightest junior tennis prospects.
