Mirra Andreeva Wins First Grand Slam Title with French Open Triumph Over Chwalinska

Posted : 07 June 2026

Teenager Mirra Andreeva captured her maiden Grand Slam title with a commanding straight-sets win over Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the French Open final.

The 19-year-old Russian lived up to her growing reputation, sealing a 6-3, 6-2 victory over a 500-1 outsider who had enjoyed a remarkable run to the final. With the triumph, Andreeva became the youngest women’s champion at Roland Garros since Monica Seles in 1992.

She completed the win in one hour and 22 minutes, collapsing to the clay in celebration before rushing to the stands to embrace her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez.

Andreeva said the victory fulfilled a childhood dream, revealing she had followed the French Open since a young age and always aspired to lift the trophy.

The final began nervously for both players, with windy conditions contributing to a series of early service breaks. Chwalinska, ranked 114th in the world, briefly delighted the crowd by holding serve first, with strong support from a large contingent of Polish fans.

However, Andreeva quickly settled, demonstrating greater composure and consistency to win nine consecutive games and take control of the match at 6-3, 5-0.

Although she initially failed to serve out the championship, she regrouped immediately and sealed victory on her next opportunity with a clean backhand winner on Chwalinska’s serve.

Andreeva’s rise has been closely watched since her breakthrough at the 2023 Madrid Open, where her fearless style drew praise from top figures in the sport. Since then, she has steadily developed into one of the WTA Tour’s leading players.

Working under Conchita Martinez, Andreeva has added maturity and tactical discipline to her natural aggression. She reached the French Open semi-finals in 2024 and further improved in 2025, winning two WTA 1000 titles and breaking into the world’s top five.

Despite occasional emotional moments on court, she showed remarkable composure throughout the tournament, including a confident semi-final win over Marta Kostyuk.

Against Chwalinska, Andreeva’s power and baseline control eventually proved decisive as she wore down her opponent and closed out a historic victory.

With this breakthrough, Andreeva joins an elite list of Grand Slam champions and signals the arrival of a new dominant force in women’s tennis.
