Mirra Andreeva overcame fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in two tense tie-breaks on Thursday to book her place in the China Open semifinals. The fourth seed prevailed 7-6(4), 7-6(3) in a closely contested quarterfinal in Beijing.
The 19-year-old French Open champion made a strong start, moving ahead early in the opening set, but Alexandrova fought back and eventually took a 5-3 advantage. Andreeva responded under pressure to force a tie-break, where she regained control and edged the set.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Andreeva built a 4-1 lead and was serving for the match at 5-3, only for the 31-year-old Alexandrova to fight her way back and force another tie-break. Andreeva then produced a crucial forehand winner to move 3-2 ahead and won five of the final six points to complete the victory.
The win marked Andreeva's first victory over Alexandrova after losing their previous two meetings. It also secured her first China Open semifinal and her fourth career WTA 1000 semifinal.
Andreeva will now face rising Czech star Nikola Bartunkova, who produced one of the tournament's biggest performances earlier in the day by defeating seventh seed Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0 in just 67 minutes.
Bartunkova controlled the match from the outset, winning the first five games before closing out the opening set. She then continued her dominance in the second, winning seven consecutive games to complete a stunning victory over her more experienced compatriot.
The 20-year-old's run in Beijing has already included a major upset over second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Her semifinal appearance is also her first at WTA 1000 level, while her performances in Beijing will take her into the world's top 30 for the first time.
