Alex Michelsen Upsets Musetti as Ruud Advances at ATP Toronto Masters

Posted : 01 August 2025

Alex Michelsen produced a memorable comeback at the ATP Toronto Masters, defeating third seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 in a thrilling encounter on Thursday. The 20-year-old American, who is ranked 26th in the world, sealed the win on his seventh match point, marking a significant milestone by reaching the last 16 of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career.

Despite hitting nearly 50 unforced errors and converting only two of nine break opportunities, Michelsen managed to stay composed under pressure. He leveled the match in a second-set tiebreak before edging Musetti, currently ranked No. 10, in the final set. This victory is Michelsen’s second over a top-10 player in eight attempts.

“It feels really good,” Michelsen said after the match. “I’ve been working hard and it’s finally starting to pay off. I returned really well today and played offensively—I executed the game plan effectively.”

Meanwhile, eighth seed Casper Ruud continued his path in the tournament with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Returning to competition after missing Wimbledon due to injury, the Norwegian found himself trailing 4-1 in the opening set. However, he fended off two break points that could have seen Borges go up 5-1 and gradually turned the tide with a late break to take the set.

Ruud, who fired nine aces during the match, secured the only break of the second set and served efficiently to claim victory. “I just crawled into the first set,” Ruud admitted. “But one break can change everything. I improved my return game and stayed focused.”

The win was especially satisfying for Ruud, who avenged a previous loss to Borges at Roland Garros. Looking ahead, the Norwegian will face 11th seed Karen Khachanov, who rallied past American qualifier Emilio Nava 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1 to book his place in the fourth round.

Their upcoming clash will be a rematch of their memorable 2022 US Open semifinal, which Ruud won. With both players regaining form, their next meeting promises high-quality tennis and competitive drama at the Toronto Masters.
