Medvedev, Swiatek Dominate Amid Rain Delays to Advance at Indian Wells

Posted : 12 March 2025

Daniil Medvedev overcame multiple rain delays to secure a dominant 6-4, 6-0 victory over Tommy Paul and advance to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. The match, initially scheduled for an earlier start, was pushed back due to weather, forcing both players to adapt to the conditions.

Medvedev capitalized on Paul’s 31 unforced errors, quickly regaining control after Paul briefly leveled the first set at 4-4. Medvedev's eight-game winning streak sealed the match, setting up a quarterfinal clash with France’s Arthur Fils, who triumphed over Marcos Giron in a rain-affected three-set match.

Meanwhile, defending women’s champion Iga Swiatek delivered a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over Karolina Muchova despite a near-hour delay before her match. Swiatek, aiming for a third title at Indian Wells, needed just 57 minutes to dispatch Muchova without facing a single break point.

The Polish world No. 2 adjusted to the worsening court conditions near the end, choosing to play riskier shots to close the match before more rain arrived. She will now face China’s Zheng Qinwen, who advanced by defeating Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in straight sets.

The wet conditions disrupted multiple matches, including Elina Svitolina’s upset of world No. 4 Jessica Pegula. The Ukrainian battled through a three-hour stoppage before completing a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win, securing a quarterfinal meeting with 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva. The Russian teenager continued her impressive form, defeating 2023 champion Elena Rybakina for the second time in three weeks.

On the men’s side, Holger Rune ended Stefanos Tsitsipas’ seven-match winning streak with a 6-4, 6-4 victory, highlighted by a stunning between-the-legs shot to fend off a break point. Rune now faces Tallon Griekspoor, who defeated top seed Alexander Zverev in the previous round and later overcame Yosuke Watanuki in straight sets.
