Medvedev Suffers Historic Rout as Zverev Battles Through in Monte Carlo

Posted : 08 April 2026

Former world number one Daniil Medvedev suffered one of the most humiliating defeats of his career after being crushed 6-0, 6-0 by Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters. The match lasted just under an hour, with the Russian struggling from the outset after failing to convert early break opportunities and quickly losing control of the contest.

Medvedev’s performance deteriorated rapidly as errors piled up, including a high number of unforced mistakes and double faults. He failed to win more than a handful of points across several games, highlighting the one-sided nature of the encounter. Frustration became evident in the second set, as he repeatedly smashed his racket on the court during an emotional outburst.

In contrast, Berrettini delivered a near-flawless display, producing what he later described as one of the best performances of his career. The Italian executed his game plan with precision, barely missing shots and dominating from start to finish. The emphatic victory marked the first time Medvedev has lost a professional match without winning a single game and stands as one of the most remarkable results in recent ATP history.

Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev showed resilience to avoid an early exit, overcoming Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin in a hard-fought three-set battle. After dropping the opening set and falling 4-0 behind in the decider, the German mounted a strong comeback, eventually securing a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Garin appeared on course for a major upset when he led 5-3 in the final set and served for the match, but Zverev responded under pressure. He broke back at a crucial moment and went on to win five consecutive games, holding his nerve in a tense finish to close out the match without needing a tie-break.

The win keeps Zverev’s strong 2026 campaign alive, as he continues his pursuit of a maiden Monte Carlo title and a complete set of Masters 1000 trophies on clay.
