Daniil Medvedev suffered a shocking exit from the Dubai Championships on Thursday, losing in a tense quarterfinal to Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. Despite holding four match points in the second set, the former world No. 1 ultimately fell 2-6, 7-6 (9/7), 7-5 to the 47th-ranked Griekspoor. The defeat marked a dramatic collapse for the defending champion, who struggled to contain his emotions as the match slipped away.
Medvedev’s frustration was evident after receiving a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct following his squandered opportunities in the second set. He directed his anger at umpire Adel Nour, accusing him of applying “double standards” to Russian players.
Nour dismissed the accusations, insisting that he treats all competitors equally. Meanwhile, Griekspoor remained composed and capitalized on his chances in the final set, eventually sealing the win on his fourth match point.
The drama continued after the match as Medvedev refused to shake hands with the umpire before leaving the court. With the victory, Griekspoor advanced to the semifinals, where he will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Matteo Berrettini. The win marks a significant achievement for the 28-year-old Dutchman, who now eyes a place in the final of the ATP 500 event.
