Medvedev Recovers to Secure Shanghai Masters Victory

Posted : 10 October 2026

Daniil Medvedev made a winning return to competition at the Shanghai Masters on Saturday, overcoming Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets to reach the third round. The Russian recovered from losing the opening set to claim a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory, marking his first appearance since his controversial disqualification at the China Open in Beijing.

Medvedev was expelled from his semifinal against Novak Djokovic in Beijing after hitting a ball into the stands that struck a spectator in the eye. The former world number one said the incident was accidental and subsequently lost the ranking points and prize money he would otherwise have earned from the tournament.

Returning to action five days later, Medvedev faced a difficult test against the 59th-ranked Struff. The sixth-ranked Russian recovered his rhythm as the match progressed, delivering 21 aces to secure the win. He took control in the deciding set, using aggressive groundstrokes and precise shot-making to overcome his opponent.

A decisive moment came in the third set when Medvedev produced an impressive backhand volley during the sixth game to establish a 4-2 advantage. He maintained his momentum from that point to close out the match and book his place in the next round.

After the contest, Medvedev explained that breaking Struff’s serve gave him confidence that he could finish the match strongly. He also noted that the playing surface in Shanghai differed from the conditions in Beijing, making the adjustment challenging during his return.

Medvedev will next face either Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina or Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry as he continues his campaign at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Meanwhile, second seed Carlos Alcaraz was scheduled to begin his Shanghai Masters title challenge against Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo later on Saturday.
