Daniil Medvedev, the former world No. 1, advanced to his first quarterfinal of 2025 in Marseille on Thursday, securing a 6-2, 6-4 win over French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The victory was a repeat of the 2021 final, in which Medvedev also triumphed.
After early exits at the Australian Open and in Rotterdam, Medvedev is looking to claim his first title since Rome in 2023. He received a wildcard entry for this tournament and will next face either Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff or Frenchman Hugo Grenier for a spot in the semifinals.
In another surprising result, China’s Zhang Zhizhen, ranked 52nd, defeated fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling encounter, winning 6-4, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3. Zhang’s powerful game saw him hit 37 winners, outshining Hurkacz’s 30 in their two-hour, eight-minute battle.
Zhang, who reached the quarterfinals in Marseille in 2024, expressed his confidence after the match, saying he felt great on court and stuck to his strategy of taking the match to a tiebreak.
Zhang will next face Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, who also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2. Both Zhang and Bergs will be aiming for a place in the semifinals as the tournament progresses.
