Medvedev excited for Paris Olympics as Russian, Belarusian tennis players approved as neutrals

Posted : 07 March 2024

World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev expressed his enthusiasm for participating in the Paris Olympics, stating that he will adhere to the rules as a neutral athlete following the International Tennis Federation's announcement regarding players from Russia and Belarus.

The ITF declared that athletes from these countries can compete in the Paris Games as neutrals without displaying flags, emblems, or anthems due to the ban on Russians and Belarusians from international competitions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Despite the neutral status, Medvedev, who had a positive experience at the Tokyo Olympics in 2019, expressed his eagerness to play in the Olympics and is open to participating in both singles and doubles events.

Reflecting on his time in Tokyo, Medvedev described it as an amazing experience and emphasized its significance in his sporting life, surpassing expectations compared to Grand Slam events.

He acknowledged the importance of following the rules and expressed his commitment to competing under a neutral flag, aiming to showcase his tennis skills and pursue victory in the Olympic event.

Russian and Belarusian players, including Medvedev, already compete on the ATP and WTA tours as neutrals, and the Olympic tennis event is scheduled to commence on July 27.
