Daniil Medvedev secured the final spot in the Shanghai Masters semifinals on Friday after overcoming world No. 7 Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4. The Russian’s solid performance earned him a semifinal meeting with unseeded French player Arthur Rinderknech.
Rinderknech continued his impressive run in Shanghai, defeating Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4. His victory marks another upset over a seeded opponent and places him alongside his cousin Valentin Vacherot and four-time Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic in the last four.
Medvedev, a former world No. 1 who has dropped to 18th in the rankings, expressed satisfaction after the win, saying he was “super happy to beat such a tough player like Alex.” The 28-year-old admitted that the season has been challenging but added, “to make the semis here is great.”
In the first set, Medvedev broke serve in the fifth game and held on despite a shaky 10th game where he faced a breakpoint and committed three double faults. De Minaur showed flashes of his usual tenacity but couldn’t maintain consistency when it mattered most. A string of errors in the ninth game of the second set sealed the Australian’s fate as Medvedev closed the match with an ace.
Meanwhile, Rinderknech’s remarkable tournament continues. Ranked 54 at the start of the event, he has defeated several higher-ranked players, including world No. 3 Alexander Zverev. His cousin, Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, also reached the semifinals after beating Denmark’s Holger Rune on Thursday.
Rinderknech was dominant against Auger-Aliassime, breaking serve in the sixth game with a precise down-the-line winner. He maintained control in the second set, breaking early to deny the Canadian any momentum.
Reflecting on his and Vacherot’s success, Rinderknech admitted that watching his cousin’s quarterfinal was more nerve-wracking than playing his own.
