Matteo Arnaldi Battles Past Frances Tiafoe in Epic Five-Set French Open Thriller

Posted : 02 June 2026

Matteo Arnaldi produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Frances Tiafoe in a gruelling five-set encounter at the French Open, winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (5/7), 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals early Tuesday.

The match lasted five hours and 26 minutes, pushing both players to their physical limits as fatigue became increasingly evident in the closing stages. Arnaldi admitted afterwards that he could barely believe he was still standing, revealing he had also been managing a foot issue earlier in the season.

The Italian described the contest as one of endurance as much as tennis, noting that he had felt exhausted as early as the third set. It marked his second consecutive marathon match after another five-set victory in the previous round.

Tiafoe appeared to be in control when he surged ahead 4-1 in the fourth set with a double break, using sharp angles and aggressive shot-making to trouble his opponent. However, as his intensity dropped, Arnaldi gradually fought his way back into the match.

The momentum shifted dramatically as Arnaldi claimed nine of the next 13 games, forcing a deciding fifth set and taking a 4-2 lead. Although Tiafoe recovered briefly to level at 4-4, the Italian broke again to regain control.

Arnaldi eventually secured victory on his third match point, despite a double fault earlier in the game that briefly opened the door for his opponent. He later reflected that the match had gone beyond traditional tennis, becoming a test of willpower and resilience.

With the win, Arnaldi becomes the third Italian to reach the men’s quarterfinals in Paris. He will next face fellow countryman Matteo Berrettini in an all-Italian clash for a place in the semifinals.

Elsewhere, Italy’s strong showing continues with Flavio Cobolli also advancing, as he prepares to meet fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last eight.
