Maja Stark Wins US Women’s Open, Becoming Third Swedish Champion

Posted : 02 June 2025

Maja Stark secured her first major championship by winning the US Women’s Open with a two-shot lead, becoming only the third Swedish golfer to claim the prestigious title. Stark’s victory at Erin Hills in Wisconsin marked the first time a Swedish player had won the event since Annika Sorenstam’s third title in 2006. Despite stiff competition from world number one Nelly Korda of the United States and Japan’s Rio Taneka, the 25-year-old held her ground to finish at seven under par.

Stark began the final round holding a narrow one-shot lead and extended it early with a birdie on the sixth hole, as her playing partner Julia Lopez Ramirez faltered. Korda started the day three shots behind but quickly closed the gap with two under par on the front nine. However, Stark responded with a timely birdie on the 11th hole, just after Korda bogeyed the 13th, allowing Stark to pull ahead decisively. She then added another birdie at the 14th, reaching nine under, while Korda’s challenge faded on the back nine.

Despite a strong effort, Korda ended the round with a bogey and finished second, marking her best performance at the US Women’s Open but still searching for her first major title since November. Reflecting on the result, Korda described the championship as "an absolute heartbreaker," expressing both disappointment and hope for future opportunities to contend at majors. Her final round of 71 was a solid effort but not enough to overcome Stark’s calm and composed play.

England’s Charley Hull showed promise during the final round with four birdies in her first 14 holes, but bogeys late in the round dropped her to a tie for 12th at one under par. Fellow English amateur Lottie Woad earned the prize for best amateur, finishing five over par after a challenging 75. Scotland’s Gemma Dryburgh, who was three under halfway through the tournament, struggled on the weekend with consecutive rounds of 78, ending at nine over par.
