Maja Chwalinska Stages Stunning Comeback to Win Wuhan Open Title

Posted : 19 October 2026

Poland's Maja Chwalinska produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Britain's Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in Sunday's Wuhan Open final, earning the first WTA Tour title of her career. The 16th seed recovered from a set and a break down to secure the trophy after two hours and 43 minutes of intense competition.

The triumph placed Chwalinska in an exclusive group of players who have won their first WTA Tour title at a WTA 1000 tournament. She became the fourth player to achieve the feat, following Naomi Osaka at Indian Wells in 2018, Bianca Andreescu at the same tournament in 2019 and Victoria Mboko in Montreal in 2025.

The victory marked another major milestone in a breakthrough season for the 25-year-old Pole, who began the year outside the world's top 100 before making headlines with an unexpected run to the French Open final as a qualifier in June.

Kartal began the final confidently, using powerful baseline shots to dictate the early exchanges. The British player broke Chwalinska's serve three times to take the opening set 6-2 in 45 minutes, leaving her within reach of the biggest title of her career.

The 24-year-old continued her strong form into the second set, establishing a 2-0 lead and putting Chwalinska under further pressure. However, the Polish player gradually improved her movement, extended rallies and introduced greater variety into her shots to disrupt Kartal's rhythm.

Chwalinska began to take control of the longer exchanges, forcing her opponent to cover more ground and creating opportunities to attack. Although Kartal managed to level the set at 4-4, Chwalinska secured the decisive break before holding her serve to win the set 6-4 and force a decider.

With momentum on her side, Chwalinska carried her improved performance into the third set. Kartal struggled to maintain her earlier intensity as the physical demands of the match began to show, allowing the Polish player to seize control.

Chwalinska broke twice and won the final five games of the match, eventually converting her third championship point to complete the 6-2 deciding-set victory. Her persistence and improved shot depth proved decisive against a Kartal who had looked firmly in control during the opening stages.

The win also capped an impressive tournament run in which Chwalinska defeated several notable opponents, including compatriot Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.

Speaking after the final, Chwalinska expressed disbelief at winning the biggest title of her career. She explained that the triumph was particularly meaningful after experiencing difficult moments following her run at the French Open.

The Pole acknowledged that the period after her Grand Slam breakthrough had been emotionally challenging, but said she continued working hard and was grateful to see those efforts rewarded.

She also credited her fighting spirit for helping her turn the final around, explaining that she focused on competing for every point until her game began to improve. Despite feeling low on energy early in the match, she gradually became more aggressive and found greater depth in her shots.

Although disappointed to lose the final, Kartal can take considerable encouragement from her performance in Wuhan. The Briton was competing in only her second tournament back after a six-month absence caused by a spinal stress fracture.

Her run to the final represented the most significant achievement of her career so far and demonstrated her ability to compete against leading players despite the extended layoff.

Kartal admitted that the physical intensity of the final may have exposed some lingering effects of her time away from competition. Nevertheless, she remained positive about her overall performance and the progress she made throughout the week.

Before the tournament, Kartal was ranked 170th in the world. Her impressive run is expected to lift her into the top 50, while also making her Britain's highest-ranked women's singles player when the updated rankings take effect.

Chwalinska's Wuhan triumph is expected to propel her to a career-high ranking of world No. 11, marking another significant step forward following her breakthrough at Roland Garros. Her progress reflects a remarkable rise from outside the top 100 at the beginning of the season.

Kartal will also benefit substantially from her performance, with her return to the top 50 rewarding a successful comeback from injury.

The Wuhan final therefore represented an important milestone for both players. Chwalinska leaves China with her first WTA Tour championship and growing ambitions, while Kartal departs with renewed confidence after proving she can challenge for major titles.
