London 2026 Beckons as Africa Eyes Breakthrough at ITTF World Championships

Posted : 26 January 2026

As the world of table tennis prepares to return to its historic roots, African nations are gearing up for a defining moment at the 2026 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in London.

Scheduled from April 28 to May 10, the championship marks a symbolic homecoming for the sport, exactly 100 years after the inaugural edition in England in 1926. With the official draw set for Monday, January 26, at The Shard, anticipation is growing among participating nations, particularly across Africa.

Nigeria and Egypt headline the continent’s charge, carrying the weight of expectation as Africa’s most consistent performers on the global stage. In total, 12 African teams will compete in the men’s event, while 11 will feature in the women’s competition, highlighting the region’s expanding influence in world table tennis.

The men’s field includes Nigeria, Egypt, Benin, Tunisia, Algeria, Togo, Madagascar, Morocco, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Angola, all aiming to navigate a challenging 64-nation draw. On the women’s side, Nigeria and Egypt are joined by Ghana, Madagascar, Algeria, Tunisia, Uganda, South Africa, Angola, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, forming one of Africa’s strongest representations in championship history.

Overall, 64 teams per gender will contest the centenary edition, with qualification secured through continental championships, world rankings as of November 2025, and automatic entry for host nation England. The competition will unfold in three phases: initial group matches in Stage 1B, Stage 1A seeding encounters for top-ranked teams, and knockout battles in Stage 2.

Spread across two iconic London venues over 13 days, the championships promise elite performance, thrilling matches, and a celebration befitting the sport’s most prestigious event. African teams will arrive not just as participants, but as contenders eager to leave a mark as table tennis returns to its historic home.
