Lehecka Levels Davis Cup Tie as South Korea Moves Closer to Final 8

Jiri Lehecka kept the Czech Republic alive in their Davis Cup qualifier against the United States by defeating Ben Shelton 6-4, 6-4 in Prague on Friday. The result left the tie level at 1-1 after Learner Tien had earlier beaten Jakub Mensik in straight sets.

Lehecka produced a composed performance against Shelton, who had reached the US Open final just days earlier. The Czech controlled the key moments to secure victory in one hour and 34 minutes and bring his country back into contention.

The United States, a record 32-time Davis Cup champion, are seeking their first title in the competition since 2007. The tie will be decided on Saturday, beginning with doubles between Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek for the USA and Adam Pavlasek and Patrik Rikl for Czechia, followed by the reverse singles if necessary.

South Korea also made a major step toward the Davis Cup Final 8 after taking a 2-0 lead over India in Seoul. Kwon Soon-woo recovered from a set down to defeat Dhakshineswar Suresh 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, before former Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung rallied past Sumit Nagal 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The result left South Korea needing only one more victory from the remaining matches to secure a place in the Final 8. If achieved, it would mark the country's first appearance at that stage of the Davis Cup.

Austria and Belgium also remained locked in a close contest. Jurij Rodionov gave the hosts the advantage by defeating Gauthier Onclin, but Zizou Bergs responded for Belgium with a three-set victory over Lukas Neumayer.

Canada took control of its tie against France in Quebec City, winning both opening singles matches. Liam Draxl defeated Arthur Rinderknech before Felix Auger-Aliassime overcame Quentin Halys in three sets.

Three other ties are scheduled to begin on Saturday. Newly crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev is set to lead Germany against Croatia in Halle, while Spain face Chile in Santiago and Great Britain host Ecuador in London.

Seven nations will ultimately qualify for the eight-team Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, joining hosts and defending champions Italy. The Final 8 is scheduled for November 24-29.
