Teenage Star Kuti Shines as Nigeria Bags Double Honours at ITTF Africa Championships
Nigeria’s rising table tennis star, Matthew Kuti, continued his meteoric rise after being named Most Improved Male Player at the 2025 ITTF Africa Championships held in Tunis.
The 14-year-old sensation, who recently broke into the world’s top 200, earned the prestigious recognition following a series of standout performances that helped Nigeria reach the semi-finals of the continental tournament.
According to ITTF Africa, Kuti’s consistency, fighting spirit, and technical growth distinguished him among his peers.
“Congratulations to Kuti Matthew, named @ethiopian_holidays Most Improved Player of the tournament,” the federation announced.
Already the reigning West African Champion, Kuti impressed fans and coaches alike with his composure and confidence on the big stage, qualities rarely seen in players his age.
In a related highlight, Team Nigeria received the STAG Fair Play Award for their outstanding sportsmanship. The men’s squad demonstrated true professionalism by changing from their green jerseys to red in their final group match, allowing opponents Morocco to wear their registered green kits, despite Nigeria winning the coin toss.
The double recognition in Tunis underscores Nigeria’s growing prominence in African table tennis and highlights a promising future led by young talents like Kuti.
