Kruger sisters secure doubles final spot at WIPHOLD International amid walkovers

Posted : 01 March 2024

Isabella Kruger and Zoe Kruger are poised for a shot at the doubles title in the WIPHOLD International in Pretoria after securing a place in the final. The South African sisters advanced through the tournament with a first-round victory, followed by two stroke-of-luck walkovers in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

American player Clervie Ngounoue's withdrawal due to illness initially granted them a quarterfinal walkover, and subsequently, French player Alyssa Reuger and Belgian partner Amelia Waligora withdrew before the semifinal, securing the Kruger sisters' place in the final.

In the upcoming doubles final on Saturday, the Kruger siblings will face off against the Russian pair of Alina Charaeva and Ekaterina Reyngold, who secured their spot by defeating Anastasia Kovaleva and Ekaterina Shalimova in the semifinals.

On the singles front, top seed Laura Pigossi of Brazil dominated her semifinal match against Manon Leonard of France, securing a 6-2 6-1 victory. Meanwhile, Hanne Vandewinkel of Belgium pulled off a hard-fought upset against the No. 2 seed Gabriela Knutson of the Czech Republic, clinching a 7-5 6-7 7-6 victory in the semifinals.

Reflecting on her performance, Pigossi expressed satisfaction with her tactical play against Leonard, emphasizing her confidence heading into the final.
