Kogi State Stars Shine at National Youth Games, securing 2 Gold, 4 Bronze in Table Tennis

Posted : 02 September 2025

Kogi State’s table tennis prodigies Victor Joseph, Marvellous Joseph, and teenage sensation Joshua Samson have made a strong impact at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, winning a total of two gold and four bronze medals. Their outstanding performances have already placed the state on the medal table.

Marvellous Joseph and Ize Sezuo delivered gold in the Boys’ and Girls’ singles events, respectively, securing Kogi State’s first-ever gold medals at the tournament. Meanwhile, Victor Joseph and Samson Joshua added two bronze medals in the Boys’ singles, further boosting the state’s tally.

The young stars continued to impress in the mixed doubles event, with Marvellous Joseph pairing with Agnes Friday to claim another bronze medal. Victor Joseph teamed up with gold medalist Ize Sezuo to secure an additional bronze, capping off a remarkable day for the Confluence State contingent.

Chairman of the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, Dr. Shaibu D. Mohammed, expressed his delight at the athletes’ achievements. “I came to Asaba to cheer them on because I believe in the strength, skill, and determination of these young players. They have made Kogi State proud in grand style,” he said.

In the company of Dr. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Mohammed—an aspirant for the upcoming zonal elections to the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) board—pledged continued support to nurture the talents and help them reach higher levels in the sport.

Kogi State Table Tennis Technical Director Coach Friday Abah also praised the squad’s performance, calling it exceptional and a source of pride for the state. He noted that their achievements at the National Youth Games are consistent with the strong showings they have delivered in recent junior championships.

Notably, Joshua Samson, after earning a silver medal at last month’s Africa Hope Week Challenge in Lagos, is set to represent Africa next month at the Hope Week Challenge in London, further highlighting the rising stars emerging from Kogi State.
