Khachanov Sends Second Seed Auger-Aliassime Out of China Open

Karen Khachanov continued his recent dominance over Felix Auger-Aliassime by defeating the Canadian 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the China Open in Beijing on Wednesday. The victory came just weeks after Khachanov also eliminated Auger-Aliassime at the US Open.

The Russian, ranked No. 26 in the world, controlled the opening set after winning three consecutive games. He secured the first break of serve and closed out the set in 31 minutes, while Auger-Aliassime struggled to create opportunities on Khachanov's serve.

Khachanov maintained his composure in the second set, breaking in the third game before producing another decisive break at the end of the match. He converted three of four break-point opportunities and completed the victory in just 71 minutes.

Despite hitting nine aces, Auger-Aliassime could not earn a single break point against his opponent. Khachanov, meanwhile, won a high percentage of points behind his first serve and consistently pressured the Canadian's second delivery.

Khachanov said he approached the Beijing meeting as a completely new contest despite their recent encounter in New York. He will next face either France's Arthur Rinderknech or Slovakia's Alex Molcan in the next round.

The result marks another early exit for Auger-Aliassime at a major ATP event, while Khachanov continues his strong run following his run to the US Open semifinals. Novak Djokovic is also competing in Beijing and is scheduled to face Portugal's Nuno Borges in the first round.
