Katie Boulter’s title defense at the Nottingham Open remained intact on Thursday, but not without drama, as the two-time defending champion had to dig deep to edge past fellow Briton Sonay Kartal 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 in a hard-fought second-round clash.
Boulter, who has now won 12 consecutive matches at the tournament, found herself trailing in the final set but used all her experience and grit to claw back and claim the win in soaring temperatures.
Kartal, showing impressive resilience and tactical variation, surged to a 4-2 lead in the third set and looked poised to eliminate the tournament favorite. However, Boulter mounted a determined comeback, eventually taking five of the last six games to seal victory.
Following the match, she praised her opponent, admitting, “I know she’s going to surpass me at some point—she’s got the game and the head for it.” Boulter also acknowledged the physical toll the heat took on her performance, joking that she’s “definitely proper British” for not coping well in hot weather.
With the win, Boulter advances to face American McCartney Kessler, who cruised past China’s Zhu Lin 6-1, 6-4 in her own second-round encounter. Boulter remains the last British contender in the draw after Mingge Xu fell 7-5, 6-1 to Polish sixth seed Magda Linette earlier in the day. Linette will go on to play Danish second seed Clara Tauson, who earned her quarterfinal berth with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Russia’s Anna Blinkova.
As the tournament heads into its final stages, Boulter will aim to maintain her strong form and capitalize on her comfort at Nottingham, where she has become a crowd favorite. Despite the intense challenge from Kartal and the stifling conditions, the reigning champion’s resilience was a reminder of why she remains the woman to beat at this year’s event.
