Katie Boulter Sets New British Record at Australian Open with First-Round Win

Posted : 14 January 2025

Katie Boulter made history at the Australian Open by becoming the sixth British player to win her first-round singles match, setting a new record for the nation during the Open era. The 28-year-old, seeded 22nd, defeated Canada’s Rebecca Marino in a tough three-set battle, securing the victory with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 scoreline. Although Boulter wasn't at her best, her resilience saw her through a challenging match.

Boulter's win added to an impressive showing by British players, with Emma Raducanu also advancing to the second round, equaling the record for the most British players progressing to this stage.

Raducanu joined Boulter, along with Jack Draper, Jacob Fearnley, Jodie Burrage, and Harriet Dart, all of whom won their opening matches on Monday. This marks the most British players to reach the second round at the Australian Open in a single year.

The previous record, set in 1974, 1975, 1985, and 2017, was surpassed by this year’s impressive group of players. However, the record tally was not extended by Cameron Norrie, who was defeated by Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, leaving him out of the second round.
