Katie Boulter Exits French Open After Defeat to Madison Keys

Posted : 30 May 2025

Katie Boulter's run at the French Open came to an early end as she fell in straight sets to American seventh seed Madison Keys. The British number one struggled throughout the match, particularly with her serve, committing nine double faults in just eight service games.

Her 6-1, 6-3 defeat to the in-form Australian Open champion marked a disappointing second-round exit, as Boulter admitted that her serving performance left her constantly under pressure against such a high-calibre opponent.

Boulter’s departure followed a similar fate for compatriot Sonay Kartal, who also exited the tournament on Thursday. Playing in her debut French Open, Kartal was inconsistent and unable to match the level of Czech player Marie Bouzkova, losing 6-1, 6-4.

Their exits meant that all British women were eliminated from the singles competition, with Emma Raducanu having bowed out earlier in the week after a straight-sets loss to defending champion Iga Swiatek.

Despite the early exits, the battle to be Britain’s top-ranked female player remains close. Boulter currently leads the pack at 38th in the WTA rankings, with Raducanu trailing closely behind in 41st and Kartal further back at 56th.

As the focus now shifts to the upcoming grass-court season, all three players will be aiming to make deeper runs and solidify their standings.
