Katie Boulter expressed relief after putting “a tough couple of months” behind her by defeating Hailey Baptiste in the opening round of the China Open. The British number two battled to a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory over the American to progress to the second round in Beijing.
The 29-year-old had endured early exits at recent majors, losing in the second round at Wimbledon to lucky loser Solana Sierra and in the first round of the US Open to Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. Against Baptiste, Boulter let a double break advantage slip in the final set but managed to regroup and serve out the match.
“I’ve had a tough couple of months,” Boulter said. “I’m really pleased with how I’m now putting myself out there and fighting for every point. She [Baptiste] was playing such disruptive tennis, but I stayed mentally strong and found a way to get through it. I did well to get through that match.”
Boulter will now face a challenging test against Amanda Anisimova, who was runner-up at both Wimbledon and the US Open. Earlier in the season, Boulter had a mixed year, but after adjusting her serve, she secured a notable win over Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima to help Great Britain reach the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals. Her campaign ended with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss to world number seven Jessica Pegula as Britain were defeated 2-0 by the United States.
Elsewhere on the tour, Novak Djokovic confirmed he will return for the Shanghai Masters in October, marking his first appearance since losing in the US Open semi-finals. The 38-year-old Serb has indicated he will continue to manage his schedule carefully to preserve his body in the later stages of his career. Djokovic reached the Shanghai final last year but was beaten by then-world number one Jannik Sinner.
This week, both Sinner and current world number one Carlos Alcaraz return to ATP Tour action, competing in Beijing and Tokyo, respectively.
