British tennis player Katie Boulter advanced to the second round of the Japan Open after completing a convincing victory over home favourite Himeno Sakatsume in a match disrupted by rain.
Boulter had established a one-set advantage and was leading 3-1 in the second set when adverse weather forced play to stop in Osaka on Monday. The match resumed on Tuesday, with the British player maintaining her momentum to seal a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Reflecting on the interruption, Boulter explained that waiting to finish the match had been challenging, particularly as she had hoped to complete it on Monday evening. She was pleased with how she refocused the following day and avoided allowing the contest to extend into a deciding set.
The 30-year-old converted five of her nine break-point opportunities, applying consistent pressure on Sakatsume’s serve. Although the Japanese wildcard earned 13 break points of her own, she converted only one, allowing Boulter to maintain control of the match.
Boulter will next face Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic as she looks to continue her progress in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Ningbo Open in China because of a persistent left thigh injury, dealing a major blow to her chances of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals. The six-time Grand Slam champion said she needed time to rest and recover after struggling with the problem in recent weeks.
Swiatek needed a strong result in Ningbo to remain in contention for one of the remaining places at the WTA Finals, scheduled for November 8–15. Her withdrawal ends her chances of qualifying directly, although she could still attend the event as an alternate.
