Katie Boulter secured her place in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open after producing a dominant performance against Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic in Osaka. The British number two needed less than an hour to claim a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory and continue her progress in the tournament.
Seeded eighth, Boulter initially faced some resistance, saving a break point in the opening game. However, the 30-year-old quickly found her rhythm and took control after the first set reached 2-2, winning nine consecutive games to establish a commanding advantage.
Golubic managed to win a game late in the match, but Boulter remained firmly in control and completed the victory without allowing her opponent to mount a meaningful comeback.
The British player will now face either Croatia's Antonia Ruzic or American Kayla Day for a place in the semi-finals.
The victory also puts Boulter in a strong position to reclaim the British number one ranking from Sonay Kartal, who moved ahead of her in the rankings earlier in the week. A place in the semi-finals would give Boulter the opportunity to regain the top domestic position.
Despite the comfortable scoreline, Boulter said the windy conditions in Osaka required patience and concentration. She was pleased that she avoided becoming frustrated and maintained her composure throughout the contest.
The Briton also praised her performance in the second set, highlighting the quality of her tennis as she closed out the match. Her progress in Japan provides a timely boost as she looks to build momentum and improve her standing on the WTA Tour.
Boulter's next challenge will be against either Ruzic or Day, with a semi-final place and the chance to reclaim the British number one ranking within reach.
